I was going to blog about the School of Rock Contest yesterday. Before I could post my entry, the email voting had been hacked by students and shut down. I heard “through the grapevine” (Tee) that it was purported one of the schools gathered up a ginormous amount of votes in a rather short period of time. Since some major coin is involved in the contest, the voting criteria had to change to make it fair to all participants.
While you cannot officially participate in the voting process, take a listen to the bands and lets have our own vote, a “Let’s Yak About Music” segment if you will. From what I’ve gathered from KZOK’s website, the challenge is for Washington State high school marching bands to play their choices of classic rock songs the best. As I’ve listened to the bands I’ve settled on 3 voting categories:
- Most Accomplished Musicianship
- Hell Yeah — Rock On
- Most Honoring of Marching Band Tradition
I’ll accept votes until January 28th. Okay—–go!
*disclaimer— this is all in good, clean fun. No prizes, other than taking pride in accomplished, appreciated musicianship, will be awarded. I’m in no way affiliated with KZOK. I’m just a band geek reliving the good, old days =)

My first pick Is South Whidbey`s version of Kashmir, definitely worthy of Most Accomplished! Rodgers’ Back in black was a sure fire toe-tapper, and gets my vote for Hell Yeah Rock on. Finally, Kennedy took a very difficult piece, and played it in pure marching band style, I thought I was back in band class!
Rock on Band Geeks, Yeah!!
Hey Jeff,
Great choices, one and all. I have picked my three winners but I’d like to have some more reader participation before giving out my selections.
Yay for band geeks!
